When you’re starting a new Aquarium for guppies, you’ll probably get one of the small desktop ones of 5 to 15 gallons (around 20 – 60 liters). Because from what you see, guppies are quite small fish to keep.
But if you wonder if you should keep both male and female guppies together? Then the answer should be NO for a couple of reasons:
+ Guppies breed very fast, each female guppy can give birth from 30 – 50 fries every month, so in a couple of months you’ll have a disaster. You’ll have a ton of problems such as constant water parameters swing, and too frequent water change leads to fish in unhealthy states.
+ Guppies grow so fast as well, in 3 – 5 months the fries will be adult size, and then your current tank will not be able to support life for them anymore. Because each tank size can only support a certain amount of fish
+ You cannot host a lot of guppies in a small Aquarium anymore and you don’t know what to do with the new guppies. Just search online on some websites like eBay or Craigslist then you’ll see why people just try to get rid of young guppies and even give up the whole Aquarium.
+ Female guppies and fries are often not colorful compared to male guppies. When you set up a fish tank, you probably want to have some lively and colorful fish to look at, while also not needing to have a lot of headache and maintenance work so this goes in the opposite direction of what you probably want at the beginning if you mixed guppy genders together.
That’s it. If you’re starting out or don’t want to maintain a very big tank, my advice is to pick some beautiful male guppies and be happy with them.
